The split chair answers a call to design a cafe chair to be built in small batch quantity entirely out of plywood. Our bodies want particular support and "give" when we sit and the response to this is usually a seat and back made of compound curves.
The split chair takes on this challenge in another tack, by using flat pieces of plywood arranged in a manner to approximate these curves. Keeping the facets split from one another incorporates the allowance for dimensional production tolerances into the design. To test the angles and sizes of these flat facets, I created an adjustable mock up seat, which can be seen in one of the photos.
